About Wushu

Wushu is a martial art form that focuses on executing routines, utilizing a wide array of weapons or barehand. These include: 长拳、南拳、太极、剑、刀、枪 and 棍. The subjective nature of the sport sets 武人 on the journey for the ever-elusive state of perfection, spending hours training every week to become a better version of ourselves, mentally and physically.

Our main event each year is the National School Games where the Hwa Chong Wushu Team is always a fierce competitor for the Championship title. Both our A Division Boys and Girls have emerged overall champions numerous times, and it is part of the wushu team's agenda to continue this legacy, not just for the school, but for ourselves and the team.

Aside from competition, Wushu is also actively involved in school performances. Being a performing sport, we love putting up dazzling and lustrous performances in front of our peers during festive occasions, such as Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival. Performances provide an avenue for all members to showcase their hard work through the years, allowing each member to shine on stage.

Behind the glamour of trophies and the flamboyance of performances, what we as 武人 deem as most important is embodying the values which this timeless art form is built upon: 武德. Teamwork, resilience, discipline, temperance, humility, sportsmanship and wisdom are cardinal virtues that we as 武人 strive to develop through the vicissitudes of our Wushu journey. Despite the flashiness of our CCA due to its nature (and training venue), the fundamental purpose of practicing Wushu is to build our character and become better versions of ourselves.

As much as Wushu is an individualistic sport, it also requires incredible amounts of team spirit. Cheers and shouts of support are what motivates us to push ourselves beyond our limits, and the companionship and bonds are what makes hours of training bearable and extra meaningful. The HCWS team has always prided itself in the familial nature of our team, with members always supporting and uplifting each other through trying times. We go through the arduous tides of life and competition season as a team, providing a retreat for members to escape from the trials and tribulations of Junior College. Ever homely and accepting, Wushu is the spark that ignites the flame of friendship.
